The relationship between supervisor and supervisee can often be challenging to navigate, with uncertainty over self-disclosure occurring within both parties. Research suggests that cultural competency within supervision improves both working alliances and supervisee confidence in working with diverse groups. However, navigating such conversations can be challenging. This is especially true in situations where a member of an underrepresented group is supervised by an individual who is unaware of cultural implications that may hinder, offend, or demoralize their supervisee. Whereas resources designed to improve psychologists’ cultural competency in patient care have become more abundant, fewer resources exist at the level of graduate curricula and continuing education for psychologists seeking to improve their cultural competency in supervising culturally diverse trainees. By reviewing implicit biases, addressing the three categories of microagressions, and providing vignettes this presentation will provide practical strategies for approaching conversations about diversity in supervision in a rehabilitation setting.

Learning Objectives:
