William S Gilmer, MD has specialized in the assessment and treatment of challenging affective disorders and the investigation of novel treatment approaches for over three decades. He currently serves as Director of Psychiatric Research and Academic Development and a member of the Interventional Psychiatry and Difficult-to-Treat Depression teams at Edward Hines Jr VA. He previously served as a founding board member of the Clinical TMS Society, and Board Chairman for the National Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance, a patient education and advocacy organization that has provided peer specialist training to veterans in the VA setting. At Northwestern University, where he is a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, he previously led a clinical research program that conducted multiple clinical trials and served as regional center director for the NIMH-sponsored Depression Treatment Network. Among his multiple clinical research interests are detection and treatment of subsyndromal activation within depressions, neurocognitive dysfunction within mood disorders, and evaluation of various factors influencing course and treatment outcome of depressions inadequately responsive to standard treatments.
