Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), Ketamine and Psychedelics are producing very promising research outcomes to treat symptoms of mental illness. The biologic mechanism of these treatments is particularly salient in neurorehabilitation, where development of psychiatric symptoms often have a suspected injury, inflammatory or stress origin. The therapeutic benefit of these treatments is thought to be due to their ability to promote neuroplasticity. In this symposium, we will will outline interventional psychiatric treatments of interest and discuss their likely biologic mechanisms. We will then discuss current, original research findings of these treatments, including optimizing TMS for treating traumatic brain injury and co-occurring conditions, a combined TMS-yoga intervention as a novel way to manage chronic pain and a proposed treatment for suicidality following neuroinjury utilizing interventional psychiatry. Finally we will discuss the clinical applicability of interventional psychiatry in neurorehabilitation presently and how to determine what patients are appropriate.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion, participant will be able to describe the theorized mechanisms of neuroplasticity impacted by the interventional treatments discussed.
Upon completion, participant will be able to understand several neurobiology-based applications of transcranial magnetic stimulation for complex neuropsychiatric conditions.
Upon completion, participant will be able to describe a possible neurobiological etiology of suicidality following neuroinjury, and how to induce neuroplasticity through neuromodulation to treat it.
Upon completion, participant will be able to understand the complexities of treating treatment-resistant mental illness and how to identify which patients might be appropriate for interventional psychiatric treatments.
