Identifying lifetime history of traumatic brain injury (TBI) using validated screening methods can optimize interventions for individuals who seek treatment in behavioral health treatment settings. However, the adoption of TBI screening has failed in behavioral health settings. Characteristics of providers are foundational determinants to the early adoption of evidence-based practices, yet, how provider characteristics affect TBI screening adoption remains unclear which limits our understanding about the key drivers to TBI screening adoption. Drawing on the Theory of Planned Behavior, we discuss how characteristics of behavioral health providers (i.e., attitudes, norms, intentions) can affect the adoption of TBI screening in behavioral healthcare contexts and identify implementation strategies to address these key determinants.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion, participants will be able to identify how provider-level characteristics can affect traumatic brain injury screening adoption in behavioral healthcare contexts.
Upon completion, participants will be able to understand the role of implementation science to improve treatment access for individuals with co-occurring traumatic brain injury and psychiatric comorbidities.
Upon completion, participants will be able to understand how to use theory-driven hypotheses to guide study design and analyses, and better understand how research can be translated to direct practice.
