Cerebral palsy is the most common disability in the pediatric population at a rate of 2-3 per 1000 live births. Guidelines published in JAMA Pediatrics suggest a framework to ensure early diagnosis when possible. As such, there has been an increased focus on early detection and intervention. This presentation will review the guidelines for early diagnosis, physical and cognitive outcomes after NICU hospitalization, utilization of the General Movement Assessment (GMA), Hammersmith Infant Neurologic Examination (HINE) and developmental assessments. The updated milestones and their significance to clinical practice will be discussed. A model for an early detection clinic inclusive of patients outside of the typical neonatal intensive care unit follow up clinic will be demonstrated. Additionally, the value of physiatry in treatment planning and counseling when CP is diagnosed early will be discussed.

Learn the administration and utility of the Prechtl General Movement Assessment, Hammersmith Infant Neurologic Examination, and Developmental Assessment of Young Children
Review the consensus guidelines for screening and early diagnosis of CP.
Review the goals of early intervention in management of infants with CP.
Understand the added value of physiatry in early diagnosis including parent and patient education, early intervention, spasticity management, and monitoring for secondary complications
