The concept of a Learning Health System, first introduced by the Institute of Medicine more than a decade ago is becoming more widely appreciated in rehabilitation. There is an increasing recognition that specialized knowledge and skills are needed for researchers to succeed in LHS research. The Learning Health Systems Rehabilitation Research Network (LeaRRn) is an NIH-funded rehabilitation resource center, established in 2020 that is dedicated to developing LHS research competencies in rehabilitation researchers. Speakers in this symposium will introduce the concept of LHS research and discuss LeaRRn’s resources and opportunities to support emerging work in this area. LeaRRn Scholars Shweta Gore and Jake Magel and health system leaders Karen Mattie and Hallie Zeleznik will discuss LHS research initiatives at BMC and UPMC health systems.

1. Identify the competencies needed by learning health system (LHS) researchers
2. Discuss opportunities available to advance LHS research knowledge and skills
3. Share examples of LHS research projects from two health systems
