Clinical practice guidelines published by the Department of Veterans Affairs/Department of Defense and the American Physical Therapy Association have recommended rhythmic auditory stimulation for the management of individuals with Stroke and Parkinson's disease. However, the implementation of rhythmic auditory stimulation gait training programs is limited by a dearth of clinicians trained to prescribe, administer, and adapt standard protocols for the unique needs of individual patients. Moreover, the use of a metronome to deliver the intervention is often not sufficiently engaging for patients, reducing uptake of the treatment. In this session, we will review the published scientific and clinical evidence for rhythmic auditory stimulation and introduce new breakthrough platform technology we have developed to innovatively use closed-loop control of music as the intervention medium for fully automated gait training personalized to the unique needs of patients across diagnostic groups.
