Treatment for speech, language, and cognitive deficits resulting from neurodegenerative disorders such as Primary Progressive Aphasia, Mild Cognitive Impairment, Early Alzheimer’s Dementia, Parkinson’s, and other such progressive diseases is essential for maintaining independence and maximizing ADL participation for as long as possible. This symposium will review the current state of treatment approaches and their efficacy, and will provide recommendations on where the research is telling us to go next, with a particular focus on involving technology in assessment and treatment, with many examples of applications and case examples drawn from persons with primary progressive aphasia.

Learning Objectives:

outline current treatment approaches for speech, language, and cognitive deficits secondary to neurodegenerative disorders, including the SLP’s role in palliative care.
describe appropriate outcome measures for speech, language, and cognitive deficits in populations with neurodegenerative disorders.
List potential computerized interventions and supports appropriate to treat speech, language, and cognitive deficits in individuals with neurodegenerative disorders.
describe individual treatment approaches (behavioral and neuromodulatory) for speech, language, and cognitive deficits in populations with neurodegenerative disorders.
