Abstract: Objectives: To investigate the amount of aerosolized microorganisms produced during endodontic procedures and to evaluate the effectiveness of antimicrobial tablets added to the dental unit waterlines in reducing bacterial aerosol contamination. Materials and Methods: All samples were collected during the first clinical session to minimize the error of control. The environmental control, a set of agar plates, were placed in the center of the operatory room and exposed to air for 30 minutes before the treatment. After rubber dam placement, the control sample agar plates (Con) were exposed approximately one meter away from the procedure site (chest area) and behind the operator (cabinet). The treatment was conducted using sterile water in the dental unit water system. For experimental groups, antimicrobial tablets (AquaTab) were added in the dental unit water system following the packaging instructions. The experimental sample agar plates (Exp) were collected as described above. After 30-minute exposure in the air, all agar plates from both control and experimental group were closed and incubated for 48 hours at 37.0°C in 5% CO2. Their second set was incubated anaerobically for 5 days. Colony-forming unit (CFU) were counted and analyzed for all samples. Results: CFU counts for anaerobic and 5% CO2 growth showed microbial counts to be lower for experimental group compared to control group. Conclusions: Our findings revealed that the application of antimicrobial tablet in the dental unit waterlines efficiently reduces bacterial aerosol contamination during endodontic procedures.
