Abstract: The aim of this study is to test the antimicrobial activity of Triton irrigant against 3% sodium hypochlorite. A direct contact test study was conducted to compare the bacterial elimination capabilities of sterile water, NaOCl, and Triton on multispecies biofilms growing on hydroxyapatite (HA) and dentin sections. Five samples were used in each group. The samples were contaminated with dental plaque and incubated for 2 weeks in a biofilm reactor (Center for Disease Control, CDC). The blocks were then randomly assigned to 1mL of water, sodium hypochlorite, or Triton irrigant for five minutes followed by a one-minute soak in sodium thiosulfate to inactive the antimicrobial activity. Quantification PCR analysis was then performed. The median values from qPCR (molecules/µl) on a logarithmic scale were Triton/dentin 1.49, Triton/HA 2.27, NaOCl/dentin 1.21, NaOCl/HA 3.51, Water/dentin 4.83 and Water/HA 4.61. Non-parametric tests were used to compare the differences in the mol/µl concentration among the groups. According to the qPCR data both antimicrobials were more effective than control in microbial reduction on dentin.
