This panel examines health risk assessment (HRA) methods (tools) and approaches used to evaluate elevated cancer and respiratory disease risks within overburdened communities. Our panelists will discuss approaches to conducting project-level HRAs, including those related to CEQA, within communities exposed to high-levels of toxic air pollution. We will all discuss cumulative health impacts in context of Assembly Bill (AB) 617 the Community Air Protection Program (CAPP). A number of tools exist to assess the cumulative impact of traffic and other sources contributing to health impacts across specific geographic regions. These tools highlight the role of other emission sources, historically not always considered under the CalEPA health risk assessment framework, and provide a direction for the development of a broader set of analytical tools for use by other communities experiencing health impacts in over-burdened communities.
