SDMA has become widely accepted as an early functional biomarker for chronic kidney disease in pets. However, new data show (yes, “show;” “data” is plural, “datum” is singular LOL) that a single mild increase in SDMA can be a medical turning point. In this session we will discuss the role SDMA plays in 5 key patient profiles, and how trending of results can offer preemptive opportunities to address potential changes in kidney function earlier than traditional functional biomarkers.
Learning Objectives:
Compare measurement of glomerular filtration rate with surrogate markers SDMA and creatinine
Gain an understanding of how functional markers such as SDMA, creatinine and urine specific gravity are affected by changes in GFR
Discuss the benefits of trending - when a "normal" result can be a tipping point
