State Public Health Veterinarian CAPC Portland, Oregon, United States
The axiom “When you hear hoofbeats, look for horses, not zebras” encourages veterinarians to first think about more common diagnoses before they go chasing a “zebra” or an unusual diagnosis. However, that mindset is changing, as vector-borne infectious diseases are now being found in places where they historically have not been on veterinarians’ radar. The reasons behind this shift, and the resulting ramifications for veterinary medicine, will be discussed during this presentation.
