Allergic dermatitis is one of the most common reasons for frustrated pet owners to bring their dog to the veterinarian. Itch and secondary infection with bacteria and yeast can be challenging to diagnose and treat. This case-based discussion will highlight anti-pruritic therapies, primary disease vs secondary signs, and a step-wise approach to determining the allergic triggers to minimize recurrence of itch and infection. Communication tools for educating clients and improving treatment outcomes will be highlighted.
