We use a case of a 5-year-old, 3rd lactation, pet Jersey cow with ketosis and hypocalcemia to describe nutritional risk factors for these conditions as well as the pathophysiology of these conditions. We describe clinical signs, diagnostics and therapeutics involved in managing these conditions in ruminants. In particular, we discuss management of diseases of energy and mineral imbalance in hobby-farm ruminants during transition.
Learning Objectives:
Describe clinical signs, diagnostics and therapeutics involved in managing nutritional conditions in ruminants
Using a case-study, identify nutritional risks presenting in a patient
Describe the pathophysiology of nutrition related conditions
