Puppy socialization and early exposure practices improve domestic dog welfare by supporting early learning about what is safe and what is not safe. Puppies who do not receive adequate socialization and early exposure are at risk of developing undesirable behaviors or fears, experiencing a decreased quality of life or damaged bond with their person, and potentially rehoming or euthanasia. Veterinary professionals are in a unique position to educate their clients about the importance of puppy socialization practices, develop interprofessional relationships with behavior professionals, and provide services and scaffolding to support client participation.
