Continuation. Sepis can be defined as a dysregulated host immune response to infection. Septic states in small animal patients can precipitate life-threatening clinical consequences including multiple organ failure. A rapid and organized approach to treatment of sepsis is paramount to ensure these patients have the best chance of survival.

Learning Objectives:

Recognize varying clinical presentations of septic states in dogs and cats
Describe an appropriate diagnostic workup for a patient with suspected sepsis in the ER
Formulate a therapeutic plan for a septic patient with a focus on describing source control, antimicrobial therapy and use of fluids
