Associate veterinarian Ann E. Bastian, VMD Blandon, PA, United States
There are no approved therapies available for use in cats diagnosed with FIP, but several recent reports suggest that some antiviral drugs may be highly efficacious against this devastating disease. Unfortunately, lack of drug development has hindered the ability of veterinarians to recommend or use these drugs in their feline patients, while simultaneously fostering a flourishing black market trade in overseas products. We will discuss the evidence and current state of affairs for the use of antiviral drugs in the therapy of FIP, as well as for influenza and parvoviruses.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion, participant will be able to identify the antiviral drugs used for different manifestations of common viral diseases of dogs and cats.
Upon completion, participant will be able to explain the difficult regulatory and market conditions that currently surround the use of antiviral drugs for the therapy of FIP.
Upon completion, participant will be able to determine whether antiviral interventions can be justified for the therapy of FIP, canine influenza, and canine parvovirus.
