As most autoimmune and hypersensitivity conditions are rapidly responsive to glucocorticoids, they may be considered the cornerstone of immunosuppressive therapy. Choice of specific glucocorticoids and adjunct therapies, such as chlorambucil, azathioprine, cyclosporine, tacrolimus, leflunomide, and mycophenolate, will be discussed. The success and side effects associated with each of these therapeutics, either administered alone or in a combination protocol, will be discussed for specific conditions, such as IBD, IMHA, IMT, KCS, lupoid diseases, and pemphigus.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion, participant will be able to identify therapeutics that are most useful for the treatment of severe autoimmune diseases, like IMHA and pemphigus.
Upon completion, participant will be able to identify which adjunctive immunotherapeutics are most useful for specific autoimmune diseases.
Upon completion, participant will be able to identify strategies for the therapy of refractory autoimmune disease.
