Equine allergies are one of the most common presenting complaints in veterinary dermatology. This seminar will review information from the World Association of Veterinary Dermatology Consensus Statement on Equine Allergies including clinical presentation (chronic recurrent urticaria, pruritus, equine asthma), diagnostic methods after ruling-out other causes (allergy testing), and treatment updates (immunotherapy, antihistamines, oclacitinib). As well, the seminar will highlight the three pathways of itch and how that may influence your therapeutic decision-making process.
Learning Objectives:
Identify the pros and cons of intradermal allergy testing versus serologic allergy testing in horses
Recognize the long-term benefits of allergen specific immunotherapy as the only disease modifying treatment in allergic horses
Summarize the difference between neurogenic, inflammatory and behavioural pruritus and identify the appropriate combination of therapies to address the equine patient's allergies.
