Stocker cattle are recently weaned beef cattle, usually managed on pasture and treated with health interventions to prepare them for feedlot entry. By nature, stocker cattle are exposed to a variety of factors likely to affect their immune system function, and by extension, their health. Historically, little information has been available regarding immunity in this class of cattle. However, recent research is beginning to reveal some of the factors that impact immunity and health in stockers; findings will be summarized in this presentation.
Learning Objectives:
Describe the factors that increase disease risk in stocker cattle
Describe how castration at arrival impacts stocker cattle health and growth
Describe what published research trials have demonstrated regarding on-arrival vaccination of high-risk stocker to prevent respiratory disease during the first 28 days after arrival
