Throughout all industries, employees report experiencing high levels of workplace stress. The pandemic intensified these stressors, especially in the veterinary profession. Increased demand for services and shortages of qualified animal health care team members have resulted in extended work hours, exhaustion, loss of resilience and cynicism. Compounding these feelings are isolationism and loneliness driven by physical distancing needs created by the pandemic. Traditionally, burnout is seen as an employee coping issue. In reality, much of burnout is driven by organizational factors. During this session, attendees will examine burnout as a workplace issue, learn contributory factors and how they can root out and eliminate these root causes.
Learning Objectives:
The ‘cost’ of burnout, to the employer, employee, and society, will be explored.
The six main organizational causes of burnout will be investigated.
Actionable ways to remedy workplace burnout will be shared.
