Most veterinarians do not have formal training to work with honey bees. However, since 2017 there has been a requirement for veterinarians to provide oversight of the medically important antimicrobials used in bees. Which means you could be called by a beekeeper to make decisions about disease management in their colonies. The good news? The clinical approach to a honey bee colony relies on the same fundamental principals as in our other food animal species. This talk will explore how to build upon that foundation in order to effectively and safely work with beekeeper clients and honey bee patients.
Learning Objectives:
Discuss how to establish a VCPR with beekeepers
Apply the principles of history taking, clinical examination, diagnostic testing, and treatment planning to honey bee colonies
List resources to ensure veterinarians have day one competencies for working with honey bee colonies
