Professor
Calgary, Alberta, Canada
Søren Boysen obtained his DVM from the University of Saskatchewan in 1996, completed a small animal internship at the Atlantic Veterinary College, and a small animal ECC residency at Tufts University, before becoming a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care in 2003. He is the former Chief of small animal emergency and critical care at the University of Montreal (2003-2009) and currently a full professor of Veterinary Emergency and Critical care at the University of Calgary. A member of several ECVECC, ACVECC and VetCOT committees he continues to actively promote the global advancement of veterinary ECC. He is the author of numerous book chapters and peer reviewed articles, as well as a recipient of several teaching, research, and speaker of the year awards, most recently the ACVECC Jack Mara Scientific Acheivement Award for advances in point-of-care-ultrasound in 2023.
He co-developed the original small animal FAST exam at Tufts in 1999, which went on to become the first work in small animals to be more broadly known as point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS). He continues to adapt and improve the application of veterinary POCUS for use in non-trauma patients. With the help of many great colleagues at Calgary and from abroad, he delivers POCUS workshops for non-specialist practitioners around the world. Along with point of care ultrasound, his research interests include hemorrhage, coagulation, and perfusion.
