Dr. Leilani Alvarez is the Director of Integrative and Rehabilitative Medicine at the Schwarzman Animal Medical Center in New York City and serves as the residency program director for Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation. She has been practicing rehabilitation medicine for over 15 years. Her advanced training specializes her skills in diagnosis and treatment of soft tissue injuries such as joint injuries, ligament and tendon tears, and spinal injuries.
Dr. Alvarez graduated with high honors from the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine. She completed her rotating internship and residency at the Animal Medical Center. Dr. Alvarez is a renowned national and international lecturer, research scientist, and accomplished author of peer-reviewed book chapters and scientific journal articles. She was honored in 2017 with the prestigious John Sherman Award for Excellence in Veterinary Rehabilitation. She is the canine exam chair for the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation.
In addition to running a busy rehabilitation practice, Dr. Alvarez volunteers at the Bronx Zoo and has been featured on Animal Planet and other syndicated shows and news broadcasts. Dr. Alvarez's research interests include soft tissue and sports injuries, geriatric medicine, joint supplements and evidence-based medicine.
