Dr. Tams spends the majority of his time in his position as the Chief Medical Officer for VCA. He received his DVM degree from The Ohio State University in 1977, then completed an internship at VCA West Los Angeles Animal Hospital and a residency program in internal medicine at Colorado State University. After working at Tufts University and Angell Memorial Animal Hospital in Boston from 1981-1984, Dr. Tams returned to Los Angeles and has been with VCA since the company was founded in 1986. He was Medical Director at the VCA West Los Angeles Animal Hospital until 1996. He currently serves as chief medical officer for VCA. Dr. Tams was named as a Distinguished Alumnus of The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2000. He has published two textbooks: Small Animal Endoscopy (Mosby/Elsevier, third edition, 2011) and Handbook of Small Animal Gastroenterology (Elsevier, second edition, 2003). Dr. Tams is sought after as a speaker in the United States and abroad on his special interest area of gastroenterology.
