Dr. Lena DeTar is an assistant clinical professor in the Maddie’s Shelter Medicine Program at Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. After graduating from the University of Minnesota CVM in 2009, she worked as a staff vet in animal shelters in the western US before completing a residency in shelter medicine through Oregon State University at the Oregon Humane Society and a master’s degree in veterinary medicine/public health at the University of Florida. In her work with Cornell’s MSMP, she teaches clinical-year students and interns at the local SPCA, lectures in the veterinary school classroom and at national conferences and provides consultation services to area shelters in outbreak response, housing/enrichment, and shelter operations. Dr. DeTar’s research investigates infectious diseases, adoption policies, shelter medicine teaching, and HVHQS/N surgery. She is honored to serving as an editor for the upcoming revision of the Association of Shelter Veterinarian’s Guidelines for Standards of Care in Animal Shelters and on the inaugural editorial board for the Journal of Shelter Medicine and Community Animal Health.
