Canine infectious respiratory disease (CIRD), a complex of viral and bacterial pathogens, is an important cause of respiratory clinical signs in dogs. Topics covered in this lecture will include innovations in prophylaxis, specifically a novel combination oral Bordetella bronchiseptica and Parainfluenza vaccine; use and misuse of CIRD PCR panels; and updates in treatment.
Learning Objectives:
To be able to interpret infectious respiratory disease polymerase chain reaction (PCR) panels, including false positive and false negative results
To understand the value of mucosal vaccination for protection against CIRD, including the role of the novel oral Bordetalla bronchiseptica/Parainfluenza vaccine
To apply principles of judicious antimicrobial use to the spectrum of CIRD cases, including knowledge of which cases would benefit, duration of use, and how to de-escalate treatment
