Outbreaks of canine infectious respiratory disease (CIRD) affect dogs of all ages and breeds and are a common reason for seeking veterinary care. Many different bacterial and viral pathogens are responsible for causing clinical signs. This lecture will discuss broad themes of CIRD in which questions arise including distinguishing clinical presentations, the choice of and guidelines for appropriate use of vaccines, patientguided diagnostic approach, patient-centered treatment, and suggestions for monitoring.
Learning Objectives:
Understand differences in the types of vaccines available, their relevance to stimulating mucosal immunity, and how to navigate various recommendations for optimal use.
Appreciate how differences in patient presentation affect the diagnostics performed and treatments recommended
Be able to develop a plan to monitor patient status, including what to do if the patient is improving, static, or declining
