Alpha-gal syndrome or “red meat allergy” is a potentially life-threatening food allergy that appears to be brought on by tick bites and can develop in people at any time throughout life. The allergic reactions are often delayed for several hours after eating mammalian meat. This One Health presentation will build a bridge between this unique allergy in people and the role veterinarians can play in helping to prevent it. The session will review the tick species that can cause alpha-gal, difficulties in diagnosing the allergy in people, and how controlling ticks in pets can help prevent alpha-gal from developing.
