This session provides an overview of recent clinical trials evaluating pharmacologic treatment of heart disease in dogs, emphasizing clinical strategies for the primary care veterinarian. The practitioner will learn practical clinical approaches to the management of myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) in dogs that are based on current science. A discussion of new therapies and alternate strategies being developed for the treatment of heart disease and heart failure in dogs will also be provided.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion, participants will understand how heart disease in dogs can be approached using a graded staging scheme
Upon completion, participants will determine appropriate therapy for each stage of heart disease, as well as for each specific etiologic condition
Upon completion, participants will recognize the scientific evidence favoring when treatment of mitral valve in dogs before the onset of clinical signs may be appropriate
Upon completion, participants will appreciate how mnemonics can be useful to recall the drugs used in the management of congestive heart failure in dogs
