This presentation will provide a recap of pertinent topics from the American Heartworm Society (AHS) Symposium, held in New Orleans in September 2022, where Dr. Moorhead was the co-symposium chair. He will provide background on interesting topics shared, along with his insights on how those findings might best be considered in the management of heartworm disease.
Learning Objectives:
Learn how new animal models will allow researchers to investigate future heartworm preventive products and treatments without the need for laboratory dogs.
Understand how a new decision tree provides an evidence-based approach for heartworm prevention and treatment that takes into consideration the resource limitations of many shelter organizations.
Explore how treating mosquitoes, rather than pets, may be a possibility in the future
Appreciate how the industry is working on more accurate diagnostic protocols for feline heartworm
disease and understanding the disease prevalence in cats
