This course is specifically designed for Veterinary Technicians who wish to increase and sharpen their ultrasound skills. Using live dogs, this lab illustrates the principles, techniques, and equipment choices for imaging basic point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) structures. The 5 key abdominal POCUS sites including the liver, gallbladder, heart via the liver, spleen, kidneys, and urinary bladder will be taught in the abdominal session. Basic anatomic landmarks to accurately identify pleural effusion and differentiate it from pericardial effusion by locating the pericardio-diaphragmatic window will also be demonstrated. Finally, phantoms training models will be used to demonstrate and practice ultrasound guided vascular access and blood sampling techniques.

Transportation: Complimentary shuttle service is provided to and from the Oquendo Center for all hands-on labs. The pickup area is located at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center entrance. Buses depart promptly 30 minutes prior to the scheduled start time of the course.

Dress Code: Please dress comfortably. Scrubs are recommended, additional scrubs are available for use at the Oquendo Center, if needed. Closed-toe shoes are required.

Learning Objectives:

• Correctly use a transducer with correct orientation and basic machine function to perform abdominal point-of-care ultrasound
• Identify the liver, spleen, left kidney, right kidney, and urinary bladder
• Locate the pericardio-diaphragmatic window of the thorax to rapidly assess for pleural effusion and to differentiate it from pericardial effusion
• Perform ultrasound guided vascular access and sampling using a phantom model
