Feather picking (feather damaging behavior) is a common presenting problem for veterinarians in avian practice. Historically, diagnostic approaches have been focused on a set of differential diagnostic considerations of potential causes, and treatments of diagnostic findings. Unfortunately, successful treatment outcomes are considerably variable. This lecture forwards a different approach to an old and common problem and can empower practitioners to intervene in a more optimally balanced manner, with a more optimal set of outcome expectations and results.
Learning Objectives:
Assemble a balanced set of options for the clinical approaches to feather damaging behaviors
Implement applied behavioral principles to feather damaging behaviors and interventional strategies
Utilize appropriate diagnostic workups and evaluations in feather damaging behavior cases
