The backyard chicken is a common patient presenting with abdominal regional disease. Although there are a number of very advanced states of anatomic pathology present in many of these patients, there also is great opportunity to shape a working diagnosis, and surgically intervene with successful outcomes. This lecture will explore common presentations, differential diagnostic considerations, diagnostic options, and surgical interventional strategies for many common presenting conditions within the abdominal region of backyard chickens.
Learning Objectives:
Apply a sound understanding of surgical anatomy and anatomic pathology in developing a surgical intervention strategy for chicken abdominal disease
Utilize appropriate pre-surgical diagnostics in order to shape a working diagnosis and surgical plan
Identify prognostic indicators, particularly for birds with more likely terminal neoplastic disease
