There are many significant differences between avian and mammalian anatomy that have direct clinical implications—including musculoskeletal, respiratory, and renal systems. In this lecture we will go ‘back to basics’ and review these differences, which will not only improve your baseline knowledge of avian anatomy, but also your clinical management of many common avian disease presentations.
Learning Objectives:
Compare and contrast the major differences between avian and mammalian anatomy, including the musculoskeletal, respiratory, and renal systems.
Discuss the clinical implications of the anatomic differences between birds and mammals.
Apply this knowledge of avian anatomy to clinically applicable interventions in avian patients such as fracture repair, intubation, anesthesia, and other common clinical techniques.
