The avian urinary system has many significant anatomic and physiologic differences from mammals, many of which have direct clinical implications. This lecture will review these differences and the diagnostics and treatments for several common renal diseases of birds.

Learning Objectives:

Review the anatomic and physiologic differences between the avian and mammalian urinary tract.
Understand the available diagnostics for evaluation of renal function in birds, and their limitations for use in this taxa, such as a urinalysis.
Discuss the pros and cons of treatment options for common renal diseases in birds, such as gout.
