Specialty Veterinary Technician Session: When a pet has GI dysbiosis, pet parents are looking for immediate relief for their pets. Commonly, veterinary teams reach for pharmaceutical support as a first line response. Understanding how to triage, and identify acute gastrointestinal cases in conjunction with appropriate nutrient choices, and alternative therapies may allow veterinary teams an alternative first-line option for pets.

Learning Objectives:

How bacteria develop resistance to antimicrobials
Differences in symptoms between upper and lower gastrointestinal dysbiosis or disease
How to triage diet choices for pets with a variety of acute gastrointestinal symptoms
Be able to identify why specific macronutrients may beneficial for different GI conditions.
Be able to calculate resting energy requirements and a feeding plan for dogs and cats.
Be able to identify 2 physiological or morphological changes that occur in the GI tract during starvation.
