S26C - Eat This, Not That? What To Feed the Pet with Cancer

When a pet is diagnosed with cancer, the owner will often ask us about what the “best“ diet is to fight the cancer and support the patient and/or adding supplements. Some owners may switch to home-prepared diets. In this talk, we will review some of the cancer diets including low-carb/no carb, ketogenic and intermittent fasting. We will review the effects of body weight on survival and discuss unintentional weight loss and cancer cachexia in cancer patients. Finally, we will discuss the impact of weight loss and poor appetite and perceived quality-of-life evaluation of their pet. Anorexia is major owner concern and is common reason for discontinuation of chemotherapy. We will discuss the new and current medications, along with my tips and tricks for preventing inappetence.
