Vector-borne agents can cause both acute, short-lived infections and chronic, persistent infections. This case-based course will examine general principles of vectorborne infectious diseases of pets and then expand on specific disease agents, including Bartonella, Anaplasma, Rickettsia, Ehrlichia, and Babesia. Transmission, clinical signs, testing, diagnosis, treatment, and zoonotic potential of both tick- and fleaborne disease agents will be explored. Vector control and veterinary staff risk factors will also be addressed.
Learning Objectives:
Review vector-borne diseases and agents that cause acute and chronic infections
Discuss other chronic bloodstream pathogens, with a focus on ticks, bartonellosis, and treatments
Explore cases and a scientific study review of tick vectors in the US
