Learning Objectives / Objectifs d'apprentissage:

At the end of this session participants will be able to / Au terme de cette conférence, vous serez:

understand the sequence of myocardial ischemia and reperfusion injury in myocardial infarction;
describe the stages of myocardial ischemia and reperfusion injury;
understand the unique pathophysiology of hemorrhagic myocardial infarction;
understand the current challenges of diagnosing aborted myocardial infarction in the Troponin era; and
understand the potential clinical value of the stages of acute reperfused myocardial infarction.

Workshop Description: In this workshop, the new "Canadian Cardiovascular Society Classification of Acute Myocardial Infarction- A classification based on stages of severity of tissue injury" will be presented and discussed. Myocardial infarction in the era of reperfusion therapy evolves in four stages: 1- Aborted myocardial infarction, 2- Cardiomyocyte necrosis without microvascular injury, 3- Cardiomyocyte necrosis with microvascular obstruction, 4- Cardiomyocyte necrosis with reperfusion hemorrhage/ microvascular disruption. With each stage, the injury progresses compared to the previous stage; stage 4 is the worst stage and is associated with infarct expansion and risk for mechanical complications. In this workshop, the four stages will be reviewed in detail, including potential use in the clinical arena and future research applications.
