At the end of this session participants will be able to / Au terme de cette conférence, vous serez:

describe the hemodynamic changes that occur during pregnancy and during the peripartum period, and how these changes can exacerbate underlying cardiac conditions;
list the investigations used in the workup of chest pain and dyspnea in pregnancy;
outline the approach and management to unstable arrhythmias in the pregnant patient; and
apply principles of managing pregnant patients with heart disease in every day practice, including involving multidisciplinary Cardio-Obstetrics teams.

Workshop Description: Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of indirect death in the pregnant patient. Cardiac events are becoming more prevalent in pregnant patients, with up to half of these events being potentially preventable. Thus, it is imperative that health care providers understand how to evaluate and manage cardiovascular disease during pregnancy. This workshop will focus on the diagnostic approach to common presenting cardiac symptoms in pregnant patients. The purpose of this workshop is to highlight high-risk cardiac features, with emphasis on the clinical pearls of assessing and managing cardio-obstetric patients to improve provider knowledge and patient outcomes. The increasing and potentially preventable nature of these cardiac events have led to calls from the Canadian Cardiovascular Society and American Heart Association to improve provider knowledge of Cardio-Obstetrics.

There will be 3 case presentations outlining challenging cardio-obstetrics cases. The cases will be summarized in 5 minutes, with incorporation of specific questions for the audience and the panel to guide discussions about management of pregnant patients requiring acute or critical care and describe decisions around delivery planning. Both the clinical and diagnostic approach to these patients will be reviewed. Within each case there will be 2-4 questions asked to the audience using the Audience Response System (ARS) followed by 10-minute discussion on approach to management by the expert panel. Presented cases will outline specific management and therapeutic approaches from the Clinical Practice Update on Cardiovascular Management of the Pregnant Patient, with emphasis on the role of Cardio-Obstetrics teams.
