Learning Objectives / Objectifs d'apprentissage:

At the end of this session participants will be able to / Au terme de cette conférence, vous serez:

define two of the most common inherited lipid disorders, Familial Hypercholesterolemia (FH) and elevated Lp(a), and discuss the importance of early diagnosis and treatment of patients with these conditions;
review current and emerging therapeutic approaches in the management of FH and elevated Lp(a);
describe the main objectives of the FH Canada Registry;
outline treatment recommendations for children with FH;
define challenges that women with FH face surrounding their care before, during and after pregnancy, and identify appropriate therapies prior to interruption of treatment for childbearing; and
describe current initiatives and available resources for patients and health care professionals in caring for patients with these inherited lipid disorders.

Workshop Description: Familial Hypercholesterolemia (FH) and elevated lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] are two of the most common inherited lipid disorders encountered in clinical practice but both remain under-diagnosed and under-treated. A key component for improving care for this population is increasing awareness through health care professionals and patients education, engagement and dissemination of research findings. This workshop will focus on recent developments in the screening, diagnosis and treatment of FH and elevated Lp(a). It will review key recommendations from the 2021 CCS Guidelines for the Management of Dyslipidemia as well as the 2018 CCS Position Statement on FH. The workshop will also introduce participants to the management of these disorders in special populations, such as children and pregnant women, and to the latest developments in therapeutics for these conditions.

In addition, members of the FH Canada Registry will address the purpose and goals of the Registry in identifying patients with these inherited lipid disorders, and current initiatives and available resources for patients and health care professionals in Canada.

This will be achieved using the outline below:

- Ms. Zobaida Al-Baldawi will provide a valuable patient perspective by sharing her unique story
- Dr. Liam Brunham with review recommendations on FH screening and treatment
- Dr. Iulia Iatan will provide a short overview of the FH Canada Registry
- Dr. George Thanassoulis will discuss Lp(a) screening and therapeutic considerations
- Dr. Michael Khoury will describe treatment recommendations for children with FH
- Dr. Iulia Iatan will discuss challenges that women with FH and elevated Lp(a) face surrounding their pregnancy and outline recommendations for early identification and appropriate treatment prior to childbearing
- Discussion with all panelists on initiatives that are currently underway in Canada, available programs and services, and practical takeaways and resources for patients and health care professionals
