Learning Objectives / Objectifs d'apprentissage:

At the end of this session participants will be able to / Au terme de cette conférence, vous serez:

cite of the most recent evidence regarding the management of atrial fibrillation in the context of cardiac surgery;
know the benefits of concomitant LAAO in patients with AF who undergo cardiac surgery;
understand the principles and indications for hybrid surgical/catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation; and
review the evidence for anticoagulation treatment following catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation and left atrial appendage closure.

Workshop Description: Management of patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) is evolving rapidly. Recent evidence suggested an important benefit of the concomitant left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) performed during surgery in patients with preoperative AF. However, some questions remain regarding the management of anticoagulation after LAAO and AF ablation. Although transcatheter ablation is a well-established therapy for paroxysmal AF, persistent and long-standing AF still represents a major clinical challenge. An emerging strategy combing epicardial and endocardial ablation (hybrid ablation for AF) might improve outcomes in selected patients.
This workshop is designed for all clinicians (cardiologists, electrophysiologists, cardiac surgeons, residents, fellows, and nurse practitioners) involved in the care of patients with atrial fibrillation.
The CHRS education committee and the CSCS planned this workshop. Members of this committee include community and academic cardiologists, electrophysiologists, cardiology residents and allied professionals from diverse practices and experience across Canada. The CHRS education committee is composed of representatives from each of the following regions: British Colombia, Prairies, Ontario, Quebec, Atlantic Provinces. The CHRS education committee in collaboration with CSCS has developed an objective and balanced representation of the topic of Combining strategies for atrial fibrillation treatment that is completely free of third-party influence and/or support. A meeting was planned to assess the needs of clinical cardiologists, trainees and internists in the field of arrhythmia management. Chairs and selected speakers are representative of diversity in gender and generation as well as the perspective from across Canada.
