Learning Objectives / Objectifs d'apprentissage:

At the end of this session participants will be able to / Au terme de cette conférence, vous serez:

understand the risk of sudden incapacitation associated with different cardiovascular diagnoses;
provide pragmatic driving recommendations to private versus commercial drivers; and
incorporate patients' values and preferences in making driving recommendations.

Workshop Description: Physicians regularly assess medical fitness to drive; consideration for community safety and patient interest must be dually covered during assessments. Cardiovascular conditions can adversely affect one's ability to drive ranging from heart function and structural abnormalities to rhythm disturbances to different cardiac interventions. Most often, these can cause transient alterations of consciousness making driving potentially hazardous. The current CCS Guidelines (in development) update those published in 2003 (CCS 2003 Consensus Conference document and the 2012 CCS Position Statement Update on Assessment of the Cardiac Patient for Fitness to Drive: Fitness Following Left Ventricular Assist Device Implantation) and provide recommendations on fitness to drive based on data about potential impairment (syncope, arrhythmia) and what is considered an acceptable level of risk for private and commercial drivers. During this session, members of the cardiovascular (CV) and broader physician community will receive an update on fitness to drive for people who live with CV diseases and / or those who have had CV procedures and surgeries.
