describe the Heart Failure Action Plan for Canada;
identify the current and future costs of hospitalization for heart failure in Canada;
compare and contrast the costs by province, age and sex;
identify costs related to medications in patients with heart failure; and
discuss the implications of these results and the opportunities to drive advocacy and health system improvement for heart failure.

Session Description: Heart failure is on the rise in Canada, currently with over 100,000 new cases diagnosed each year and 750,000 people living with heart failure in Canada. Heart failure is a leading and growing cause of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, a leading cause of hospitalization in Canada, and among the highest rates of hospital readmission. It imposes a significant economic burden on the Canadian healthcare system. One of the main cost drivers is the direct healthcare costs spent on hospitalization. In recent years, there has been a development of novel therapies, changes in management strategies, and changes in population demographics. This late-breaking presentation will provide NEW data from a recent Canadian HF economic analysis and describe the economic burden of HF hospitalizations in Canada from 2010 to 2019 and estimate the future burden of HF hospitalization from 2020 to 2040. Furthermore, with the development of novel pharmaceutical drugs, the economic burden of HF drugs in the elderly population from 2013 to 2019 will also be presented.
