Learning Objectives / Objectifs d'apprentissage:
At the end of this session participants will be able to / Au terme de cette conférence, vous serez:
implement a structured approach to the investigation of unexplained arterial thromboembolism;
understand the limitations of testing for inherited thrombotic disorders in patients with unexplained arterial events; and
select appropriate management strategies for secondary prevention of unexplained arterial thromboembolism.
Unexplained arterial thromboembolism refers to events without a clear atherosclerotic or embolic etiology, particularly in an unusual site and/or in a younger patient. In this session, we propose a structured approach to evaluation with consideration of all potential causes of arterial thromboembolism. We then discuss three cases, focusing on unusual vascular locations (renal, splenic, and mesenteric artery), the role of inherited thrombophilias, the selection of antithrombotic therapy (anticoagulation versus antiplatelet therapy), and other secondary prevention strategies (statin use).
