Learning Objectives / Objectifs d'apprentissage:

At the end of this session participants will be able to / Au terme de cette conférence, vous serez:

review the treatment of ventricular tachycardia;
recognize the current indications for physiological pacing in patients with and without heart failure;
revise the novel technologies and strategies for catheter ablation of atrial and ventricular arrhythmias;
recognize the current indications for lead extraction of cardiac implantable devices and risks associated with the procedure; and
examine the genetics of idiopathic ventricular fibrillation.

Workshop Description: The CHRS Spotlight session “ELECTROPHYSIOLOGY THE NEXT GENERATION: RAPID REVIEWS” will take the form of a plenary session on heart rhythm disorders and will be open to all CCS delegates. The topics selected are relevant for clinical cardiologists as well as for electrophysiologists. Each speaker will provide the audience with an up-to-date concise review of their assigned topic. The topics were selected according to the relevance for the CCS and CHRS community and to the field of expertise and research interests of the speakers. In addition, this session will introduce the new electrophysiologists across Canada to the CHRS and CCS community, which is of outmost importance especially considering that they started their practice during or shortly after COVID-19 pandemic. This session includes presentations and review the following topics: 1) Treatment of ventricular tachycardia 2) New catheter ablation strategies and technologies 3) Transvenous Lead Extraction: Indications, Outcomes and Risk Prediction 4) Indications for physiological pacing in patients with and without heart failure 5) Inherited cardiac arrhythmias. Generally, there is a limited appreciation of a rational approach to the management of these arrhythmias or of the risks and benefits of the different technologies and strategies for the treatment of such cases. This session will fulfill the learning needs of those seeking a practical approach to these difficult arrhythmia cases. Difficult arrhythmia cases like those addressed in this session are a frequent challenge to all involved in the clinical management of patients. This session will provide participants with a 2023 update on the comprehensive and practical approach to these conditions. Session participants will also learn how to interpret the ECG tracings in such cases. The CHRS executive and education committees planned this session. Members of these committees include community and academic cardiologists, electrophysiologists, cardiology residents and allied professionals from diverse practices and experience across Canada. The CHRS education committee is composed of representatives from each of the following regions: British Colombia, Prairies, Ontario, Quebec, Atlantic Provinces. The CHRS executive and education committees have developed an objective and balanced representation of the selected topics that is completely free of third-party influence and/or support. Email discussions took place to assess the needs of new electrophysiologists in the country as well as those of clinical cardiologists, trainees and internists in the field of arrhythmia management. Selected speakers are the next generation of electrophysiologists from across Canada.
