At the end of this session participants will be able to / Au terme de cette conférence, vous serez:

learn the basic components of a Swan-Ganz catheter, indications and contraindications, and how to insert a Swan Ganz catheter (practicing insertion technique on a mannequin);
cardiogenic shock station: Define cardiogenic shock. Understand the expected changes (cardiac output/index, SVR, PCWP) on Swan-Ganz catheter in a patient with cardiogenic shock. Differentiate from hypovolemic and septic/vasodilatory shock. If time: know how to calculate SVR, understand the incremental value of PVR/TPG and PAPi/RVSWI in assessment of advanced therapies (cardiac transplant and durable LVAD, respectively);
pulmonary hypertension station: Define pulmonary hypertension (PVR/MPAP), including pre- and post-capillary pulmonary hypertension (defined per TPG/DPG), and differential diagnoses for each. If time: understand the role of vasodilatory testing; know how to calculate PVR in Dynes and Wood Units; and
intracardiac shunts/Congenital station: Understand the physiologic changes with pre-tricuspid (e.g., ASD) and post-tricuspid (e.g., VSD) shunt lesions. Understand what a "shunt run" is, along with interpretation of and localization of shunts. If time: learn how to calculate a Qp:Qs ratio.

Workshop Description: This session is aimed at providing a broad overview of the Swan-Ganz catheter, and interpretation of Swan-Ganz catheter in three distinct scenarios: cardiogenic shock, pulmonary hypertension and intracardiac shunts.
