Learning Objectives / Objectifs d'apprentissage:

At the end of this session participants will be able to / Au terme de cette conférence, vous serez:

describe the Canadian experience with DT-LVAD;
identify when to refer patients with advanced heart failure for DT-LVAD assessment;
discuss ethical considerations of LVAD implantation and access disparities across the country; and
describe program development and infrastructure in a DT-LVAD program.

Workshop Description: Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVADs), can improve survival and quality of life in patients with advanced heart failure. LVAD implantation as destination therapy (DT LVAD) has become an effective strategy in selected transplant-ineligible patients. With improvements in device technology in recent years, there has been increased use of DT LVAD in many large centers in Canada, the United States and worldwide. The future for DT LVAD therapy looks promising with iterative improvements in device longevity, patient management, and clinical outcomes. Eligible heart failure patients who receive DT LVADs are surviving longer with improved quality of life and fewer complications, highlighting the importance of timely referral for appropriate patients. However, the cost of this therapy places a significant burden on the health care system and there are only 2 provinces in Canada officially offering DT LVAD. This session will describe the current landscape of DT-LVAD in Canada and focus on several important considerations as we adopt DT LVAD therapy across Canada, including timely referral to DT-LVAD, ethical issues related to access, and program development and infrastructure.
